Data cooperatives are technical and institutional layers which mediate data flows between those who generate data and those who use it. While they have the potential to revolutionise the way data is governed and even generated for large scale use, there are a limited number of real world examples of successful data cooperatives. To promote and guide the establishment of data cooperatives, Aapti Institute, Data 2X and Open Data Manchester have published a handbook on ‘How to Build a Data Cooperative’.
The handbook details the process of establishing a data cooperative and offers guidance on the various aspects to take into consideration in this process. Using this handbook, groups interested to organise themselves as data cooperatives can create a roadmap to help them along the journey.
This handbook has been informed by the experience of all three organisations in the practical operationalisation of data co-operatives.
