We recently concluded a workshop titled “Tools of Tomorrow: AI for Cybersecurity and Digital Integrity,” as part of Aapti’s AI x Safety Community of Practice Initiative, supported by Google.org. This convening brought together thought leaders from academia, civil society, and the tech industry to explore the growing intersection of AI, digital integrity, and cybersecurity. Through insightful discussions, participants examined the potential for AI to enhance cybersecurity measures and digital integrity while addressing the challenges posed by AI’s integration into sensitive online environments. The workshop provided a collaborative space to outline key risks and benefits within this landscape, setting a foundation for a responsible approach to AI in these critical areas.

Central to our discussions was the framework of Trustworthy AI (T-AI), which emphasizes principles like reliability, resilience, transparency, and accountability. These principles were explored as a pathway to mitigate harms while enabling AI to positively transform cybersecurity. Attendees delved into the nuances of digital integrity—understood as protecting users’ bodily and mental autonomy—and how AI could support this. Together, they identified several actionable mitigation strategies, including building robust datasets, enhancing transparency in AI models, and emphasizing human oversight to prevent and address adverse impacts.

Our workshop concluded with a series of recommendations to guide future actions and policy considerations. Key takeaways included the importance of embedding human oversight across the AI development lifecycle, promoting AI systems that are both contextually relevant and inclusive, and encouraging the use of AI chatbots for enhanced cybersecurity support. Through these efforts, we aim to build a framework that not only fortifies cybersecurity but also respects digital integrity, paving the way for AI that is safe, accountable, and aligned with human values.
