Downstreaming Responsible Artificial Intelligence in India: A White Paper

India boasts a dynamic AI ecosystem, marked by the highest AI skill penetration in the world, a thriving startup culture, and momentum towards decentralised regulatory mechanisms. We, at Aapti, have found that sustaining this growth requires building public trust by embedding Responsible AI (RAI) practices at the core of innovation.

We have translated our research findings on the downstreaming of Responsible AI (RAI) into a white paper. A key takeaway from our study is that each recommendation requires coordinated, cross-sectoral collaboration bridging disciplines, actors, and institutions to truly embed Responsible AI in India’s innovation landscape.

The white paper identifies a critical gap between high-level RAI principles and their real-world application in India’s innovation landscape, particularly for smaller players with limited regulatory capacity. Drawing on a mixed-methods approach, including landscape analysis and expert interviews, the study provides a grounded view of the challenges and opportunities for RAI adoption in India.

Our research illuminated 5 key dimensions: resources, knowledge, tools, processes, and regulatory frameworks that impact the adoption of RAI in system building. Through our research, we have come up with practitioner-first recommendations to promote the adoption of RAI practices in Global South contexts like India.

These include:

  • Establishing a shared repository of resources
  • Building a community of practitioners
  • Fostering cross-sectoral collaboration
  • Enhancing training and support for developers
  • Introducing certifications and external standards
  • Raising public awareness
