Data work and content moderation in Africa: A Regional Policy Dialogue

On 30 July, 2025, Aapti Institute and GIZ GmbH convened an online discussion on data work and content moderation, focusing on Africa. The first in a series of regional policy dialogues, this event brought together people involved in Africa’s landscape, from worker organizations, civil society and research, and members of the government. Our conversations looked at working conditions of data work and content moderation, the roles and effects of technologies like algorithms, and the question of transnational labor measures for the tech sector’s outsourcing in sectors like AI and online safety.

We have compiled a readback document to recount some of the major points discussed in the regional policy dialogue. We plan to conduct two more such dialogues in the near future, focusing on Southeast Asia and South Asia.
